Other Towns >> Marianske Lazne & Karlovy Vary
Also known as Marienbad and Karlsbad
Marianske Lazne, the youngest of the West Bohemia spa towns, is distinguished by its picturesque surroundings. The valley in which the town lies opens up towards the south, and is protected with forested hills on the other sides. The elevation of 630 metres above sea level, clean air, carefully manicured parks, forests surrounding the spa, specific architecture and eventful cultural, sports and social life all make up the unique character of Marianske Lazne. As early as at the beginning of the 19th century, Marianske Lazne became a world famous and much frequented spa location. Among the prominent visitors, there were Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Fryderyk Chopin or English King Edward VII. who came nine times between 1899 - 1908.
Karlovy Vary is the most famous Bohemian spa. It was named for the Bohemian king and German and Holy Roman emperor Charles (Karl) IV who allegedly found the springs in 1358 during a hunting expedition. In the 19th century, royalty came here from all over Europe for treatment. Among the rich and famous who visited Karlsbad are Schiller, Beethoven, and Karl Marx.
